What Is SS-31

SS-31 is a synthetic Szeto-Schiller peptide with the sequence D-Arg-dimethylTyr-Lys-Phe-NH₂. Its alternating cationic and aromatic residues let it cross cell membranes and concentrate roughly 1,000-fold inside mitochondria, where it binds cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane. By protecting cardiolipin from peroxidation, SS-31 stabilizes the electron transport chain, restores ATP synthesis, and reduces reactive oxygen species at their source.
